Step 3 – Portfolio + Creative Works
Choose Your Application Path: Option 1 OR Option 2
As part of our assessment of your probable success in our BAS degree we need to consider your creative and 3D thinking potential. When you sign your admissions application you are also stating that you are the author or originator of the work you submit for this part of your application (you have not gotten someone else to do it for you).
Architectural studies cover many disciplines such as history, geography, mathematics. Art, and design in particular, is a skill set that you will develop further during your studies at SEA.
Portfolios help the academic staff to learn more about your approach to design. We understand that not everyone has the same level of artistic experience. This is not a test, this is an exercise in thinking visually. There is no right or wrong way to approach this task. Relax, take your time, and most importantly explore.
Please choose from one of the options below (you may also choose to submit both options).
Option 1 – Portfolio
Use this option if you already have existing creative work.
- What to submit: Any or all portfolios you have previously created for any school of architecture application. This can include art, photography, code, digital media, etc.
- Where to upload: Submit your files to our applicant system, Cargo, at https://sea.ac.za/cargo. You will need to create an account to upload files. Please use the same email address used in your online application form.
Note: You must create an account using the same email address you used in your main online application form.
File format:
- File names should start with ‘Portfolio_’ followed by your surname followed by your first name (and then numbers 001 upwards, for example: Portfolio_Last_First_001.PDF).
- All portfolios must be in PDF format
- Each file must be less than 200Mb
Upload to Cargo
Option 2 – Creative Task
Use this option if you do not have a portfolio, or want to supplement your application.
- A series of tasks designed to demonstrate your ability to think, narrate, and explore spatially and visually.
- Requirement: You must show your process/working for each task.
Who needs to do this?
- Mandatory: For all applicants who DO NOT submit a portfolio under Option 1.
Optional: Applicants who did submit a portfolio are still highly encouraged.
Uploading
Upload both the video and the drawings/models to our applicant file system called ‘Cargo’ at https://sea.ac.za/cargo/. You will need to create an account to upload files. Please use the same email address used in your online application form.
- These file names should begin with ‘Creative_’ followed by your surname, followed by your first name (and then numbers 001 upwards, for example: Creative_Last_First_001.MP4).
- Images must be formatted in one of the following .JPG .PDF .PNG .GIF
- Videos must be formatted in one of the following .MP4 .MPG .MOV
- Each file must be less than 200Mb
The Task List
1. From My Doorstep: Moving an Object – A3(s) ( portrait or landscape)
Start in your room and choose one everyday object. Draw the object where it is now, showing its surroundings and where it belongs in the space. Next, imagine the object somewhere completely different. Think about how it might change if it were placed in a new environment. Would it feel bigger or smaller? Would it be used differently? Would it take on a new meaning?
For example:
- A mug becomes a water tank in the desert.
- A phone is trapped inside a large rock.
Create a series of small drawings that show the object’s journey from its original place to its new one. These drawings can be rough, experimental, and imaginative. They do not need to be accurate in size or detail.
You can use any media.
Only your final drawing should be carefully completed. It should clearly show the object in its new location, including its size, materials, and surroundings. Think of the earlier drawings as sketches for testing ideas, while the final drawing is the finished outcome.
2. The View From Here- 3A (s) (landscape or portrait)
Fill one A3 page with a drawing or painting of the view from your window. Look carefully at what you can see. Notice the light, shadows, colours, textures, and details around you. Draw what is there in real life, not from a photograph.
Use any medium.
Once you have finished, create a second version of the same image.
You can do this by:
- Drawing digitally over a photograph of your original drawing, or
- Making a photocopy and drawing directly onto it
In this second version, add something that you think would improve the place outside your window. This could be something small or large, practical or imaginative.
On the same page, write one or two sentences by hand explaining:
- What you added
- How it would improve the place
- Why you think it is important
3. Beneath the Floor – Scale Model- any size
Imagine there is a world under your room or house. What do you think is down there? This world can be real or imagined, quiet, strange, familiar, or completely made up but you need to explore it through drawing and making.
You must include
- A drawing showing your room above and what is below the ground
- A physical model that explores what the space below looks like and how light and space work in it
Focus on:
- How spaces connect to each other, not just what they look like on their own
The relationship between what is above, at ground level, and below
Size, scale, and how people might exist in the space…
You can use collage, different materials, and storytelling. But your work must clearly show an idea about space, not just a collection of shapes or objects.
4. Patchwork Place – Any size
Create a layered collage that shows your neighborhood. Use hand drawing, photos, and found materials to build it up. Your hand drawing must be clearly visible in the final work. The aim is not just to show what your neighborhood looks like, but what it feels like to live there.
Your collage must include
- Hand drawings such as sketches or studies you make yourself
- Photographs such as your own or found images
- Found materials such as textures, maps, packaging, or rubbings
Focus on showing
- How your neighbourhood is arranged including streets, boundaries, and important places
- What it feels like to move through it such as busy, quiet, fast, or slow
- The mood and atmosphere created by colours, textures, and layers
5. What’s in Your Pocket? – A3 – fill the page
Collect and draw the 1 or 2 most important things you carry with you. Draw your hand holding the object. Use pencil or pen only. Draw as realistically as you can. Fill the Page.
6. 3D Drawing: Object to Furniture Transformation- Any size
Find a discarded, broken, or unused object. Study it carefully and use it as the starting point for a design transformation. Reimagine the object as a piece of furniture, such as a chair, lamp, table, shelf, or another useful object. Think about how its form, material, structure, and character can inspire something new.
Develop your idea through a series of drawings. Show how your design evolves from the original object through observation sketches, explorations, experiments, and iterations. Allow your drawings to test different possibilities before arriving at a final proposal. As you work, explain your design decisions. Describe why you selected the object and how its qualities informed the transformation.
- Include drawings of the original object from observation.
- Show the development of your idea through multiple sketches and design iterations.
- Include drawings that communicate scale using a human figure and/or clear dimensions.
- Produce drawings that explain how the object functions as furniture.
- Show the final design in use, with a person interacting with it in a real or imagined setting.
- Include short written reflections that explain key design decisions throughout the process.
Produce 3D resolved drawing(s) that clearly communicate your final furniture design, including its form, structure, scale, and use. Show all process work.
